Unix Workout
The exercises in this document is meant to improve your Unix knowledge, such as daily commands and manual pages.
Single commands
- Find all text files (
.txt) in your home directory using thefindcommand - Create an empty file named
empty - List the
emptyfile with its permissions. - Who are you in this system? what is your username? what is your user ID? which groups do you belong to?
- What's the date and time right now?
Piping commands together
- Did you find all the
.txtfiles? good! now put that output into/tmp/txtfiles - Without using a text editor, put
hello there!intoempty - Using your favorite editor, Vim, put more content into
empty - Print the content.
- Print the content and look if the string
lois in there!- Which line is it on?
- Get the date, again, and pipe it into
vim:)
